Introduction
Our Design, Engineer, Construct (DEC) programme is available for students in years 10/12 interested in learning about the design and construction industry, and careers like architecture and engineering. It takes place during our school's Curriculum 21 timetable periods, which are dedicated to real world learning. Our programme is project-based and involves designing and making in response to a commissioned brief by a client. To support you with this, you will have access to facilities in our Makerspace studio with facilities for CAD/CAM and model making. Throughout the project, you will learn from professionals and be introduced to some of the big ideas affecting the industry such as sustainability, human-centred design, community, inclusion, heritage and how digital technology is transforming the sector. You will also learn about the types of roles within the industry and career pathways to consider next steps if you are interested in studying further. An important aspect of the programme is to learn by going on trips and doing field work. There are also work placements built in at different points, when you will have the opportunity to be mentored by professionals in industry to support with you respond to your own project brief. Who would it suit? This is a unique opportunity for those of you that are interested in learning about the built environment and jobs in architecture and engineering in the design and construction industry. However, you might just enjoy the creative process and design thinking that includes researching, problem-solving and generating ideas before presenting them as hand/digital drawings, 3D models and/or computer-aided designs (CAD). DEC Award Successful completion of the programme and submission of evidence will will lead to a DEC Award, which is endorsed by Training Qualifications UK (TQUK) and linked with an organisation called Class of Your Own (COYO), who work with a large network of employers in the industry like Balfour Betty and Transport for London.
