Congratulations year 9 on a fantastic exhibition of your Cold War chess pieces and caricatures. So much grit has resulted in some exceptional work. See more photos by visiting this Flickr album: https://flickr.com/photos/87815723@N03/sets/72157651960809679

So far, some great work is being produced by year 9s on their Cold War chess project. Having learnt about caricature and clay bust modelling, the first batch of sculptures are now ready to put in the kiln. Here is a link to the Flickr album: https://flickr.com/photos/87815723@N03/sets/72157651960809679 Came across this intriguing junk sculpture outside the little angel theatre in Islington. Might be a good year 6 or 7 project based on the question: 'If objects were alive, what environmental issues would they protest about?". They could then create figures from recycled objects protesting in the form of a group installation, drawing inspiration from artists such as Yinka Shonibare, Richard Wentworth and Matthew Barney. Please come and see our year 8 sculpture exhibition on Tuesday 31st March at The Podium space next to the Orbit Tower in Stratford. Please see leaflet attached for more info. Came across these pavement portraits made using mosaic tiles around the southbank.. Might make an interesting portrait project for students around the school premise.Would be good to link in some way to local history. Came across this interesting garden sculpture near stoke newington. Would make a fun mini pop up garden project. Inspired by Benyamin's plastic milk carton elephant, a nice project might be to take an inverted milk carton and transform into a mask based on African masks.. A visit to see the Chapman brothers "exotic" sculptures at Tate Britain might be a good starting point for responding to the word 'tribal' and its origins as a colonial term and how we might understand it today if making an exhibition reflecting our personal identities/culture. Ekaterina Panikanova is an artist that paints on books to create large scale installations. Responding to her work and that of Chuck Close in a collaborative piece might be an interesting combination. http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2013/06/book-paintings-by-ekaterina-panikanova/ Came across these pattern off cuts used by my wife for designing a dress and thought it would make a good resource for creating cubist style relief collages. Could roll various materials around a pole and then cut up and stick down (in a carefully composed arrangement, of course - nothing ad hoc!). Might also be a good experimental process for designing futuristic architecture.
Cardboard is a great, cheap material that can be used for making sculptures and models. Have a look at these links for ideas:
